the giara museum
The ‘Museo della Giara’ is located in the centre of the village in a historical building known as Municipiu becciu. It is a newly designed facility where it is possible to discover all the secrets of the plateau: from the mysterious origins of the horse to ancient archaeological finds. The tour runs through three exhibition rooms. During the visit, guests are taken on a fascinating and varied cognitive journey that ranges from the unique geological evolution of the Giara to the biological complexity of the plateau and includes an archaeological section dedicated to the territory. Ideal, therefore, as a preparatory step to a visit to the plateau or as a place to deepen one’s knowledge of the Giara. The aim of the museum is to make people know and appreciate the immense heritage of this corner of Sardinia and to make them respect the different realities that surround it.
The museum is located in a building built in the fascist style by the then podestà Pietro Serra, who lived there. After the bombing of Cagliari in 1943, it housed the headquarters of the Bank of Italy. It later became a municipal palace, employment office and school. The museum was inaugurated in 2011. In 2024, it underwent a major restoration with PNRR funds.
It is now managed by the Fondazione Altopiano della Giara (Giara Plateau Foundation), which manages all the services for the preservation and enhancement of the areas of cultural and tourist interest, with particular reference to the Giara Plateau, the municipalities of Genoni, Gesturi, Setzu and Tuili. The museum offers visits to religious monuments and the historical centre. This itinerary also illustrates the peculiarities of the house where the Blessed Fra Nicola was born, a typical Campidanese house located in the historical centre that has been faithfully restored.
