Man And The Giara
Man And The Giara
It is a volcanic plateau located in south-central Sardinia, on the border between the Marmilla and Sarcidano; ellipsoidal in shape, with major axis oriented along the NO-directionSE, it looks so imposing that it seems like an island emerging from the surrounding territories.
At the top there is a rocky frame (known as crown), made up of basalt flows that rest on marl-sandstone sediments of slopes with varying inclinations.
It has a total area of 43 km 2, with maximum length of 12 km and width of 6.5 km. Exceed its average height, 550 meters, Zepparedda (609 meters) and Zeppara Manna (580 meters). The owners of the plateau are Genoni (16), Gesturi (20 hectares), Setzu and Tuili.
The territory also includes ten other: Albagiara, Assolo, Barumini, Genuri, Gonnosnò, Nuragus, Nureci, Senis, Sini and Usellus.
Man has always exploited his resources (timber, game, horses and cork) and transformed the spaces for agriculture and livestock, even with degrading interventions (deforestation, selective cutting and use of fire), which have created imbalances resulting in the impoverishment or disappearance of living species. As a landscape complex in which several inter-related ecosystems coexist, the modification of only one could compromise everything. Today, local communities are working to identify strategies for the protection and enhancement of ecological diversity and rare species, safeguarding traditional human activities within a balanced and environmentally friendly use.
This philosophy is also supported by the European Union with the “Habitat” and “Birds” directives, with the establishment of the “Natura 2000” network and with the recognition of a Site of Community Importance (SIC).
