Simulated nuragical excavation

Simulated nuragical excavation

Educational archaeological workshop with an interdisciplinary character

Description: This workshop is both exciting and complex. It is not limited only to the discovery of finds, but ample space will be given to other fundamental activities: photographic survey, documentation and interpretation of the excavated context in order to understand what activities were taking place in the environment brought to light. The excavation will be preceded by a short theoretical lesson, held by an archaeologist, in which each student will be assigned a role in the ‘site’: excavation logger, inventory manager, photography manager or worker. Once they understand their role, they can start with the excavation: the workers will be assigned a small sector of the hut and will unearth the finds, documenting the operations in detail. At the end of the excavation, the uncovered finds will be reviewed and by evaluating the associations of materials, an attempt will be made to understand the function of the hut.

Aims and objectives: The aim is to educate young people to understand the world of historical-archaeological research through the concrete practice of the fundamental stages that characterise the archaeologist’s profession. It is a specific practical activity that amply meets the aim of developing the children’s attitudes and interpersonal skills, ‘investigative’ spirit, visual and tactile perception and manual skills.

Target audience: The complexity of the excavation workshop makes it more suitable for children in the final years of primary and secondary school.

Implementation phases and methodology: Guided visit to the museum. Archaeological didactic workshop – manual with a multidisciplinary character on the Giara plateau.
